Green Tip of the Month

Let's make this simple.  Turn off the AC; open up your windows; enjoy a cool evening!

  Did you know?

What exactly is BPA and why should I be concerned?

BPA stands for " bisphenol-A" which is a chemical that can be found in some polycarbonate plastic bottles.  Polycarbonate bottles are clear, sturdy, and lightweight and do not have a distinct smell or taste noticeable when using them for food and beverages.  If you look on the bottom of your bottles, they are usually labeled as a #7.  It was only by accident that BPA was detected and found to be a problem.
Dr. Patricia Hunt, a geneticist at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, was studying birth defects in lab mice and then traced the origin of a spike in abnormalities back to BPA leaching from their cages. Just to be sure, the team repeated the "accident" and verified the culprit.  On the other hand, Nunc International, the maker of Nalgene bottles, one of the leading manufacturers of polycarbonate plastic bottles containing BPA, presented their own study and claims that their bottles are safe for human consumables.  Hunt pointed out however, that their studies were flawed in that Nunc's research did not include the study of eggs or embryos.  Her point?  Do we really want to take any chances with our lives and those of our children?   You be the judge.  Thorough cleansing of all water bottles is crucial.  Single use bottles in particular are difficult to get clean enough to use again.  So what do we do?
There are many metal bottles available in the market now that contain none of the harmful chemicals.  Look for BPA-free products to be labeled as such.  Tritan plastic has been developed to have many of the positive qualities (clarity, durability, lightness) of polycarbonate bottles but not the negative.  And then of course, if you are staying home, you can always drink from a real glass!
